We have experience in importation in Kenya and also Uganda. We also have very good contacts in Rwanda and the DRC that can advice on importation modalities.

Importing products into the East African countries is not as seamless as in the developed world. There are bottlenecks that an importer must face. We have experience in knowing how to deal with problems that could arise. We would identify responsible parties for handling clearance. We can assist in filling in necessary documentation for importation in Kenya through our affiliated office.

We would also inform on other regulations in regards to importation. In Kenya-for example most imports have to be inspected prior to shipment and need to meet standards set by the local standards bureau. We can advice what standards apply to various products. The importation process can be an extremely cumbersome one if the proper channels are not followed. In East Africa Mombasa and Dar-es-Salaam are the major sea ports. These ports service countries that are landlocked within East Africa. There are also dry ports and it is in these ports that clearance with customs is effected for trade that takes place within the East Africa bloc.

Import duties vary in each of the respective East Africa countries and duties also differ depending on the trading bloc that a country is a member to. The rate of duty can be a very important determining factor when deciding which country to import from. The rate of duty that is paid is an important factor when computing the final cost of goods. There is a large parallel market in all the East African countries.

It in this market, that the normal process that exits for importation is circumvented. We are able to give advice on which products would be particularly vulnerable due to the existence of this market. It is very important to understand the mechanisms that do exist for importation. These mechanisms cannot be compared with those mechanisms that exist in the developed world. This area can be a potential pitfall for a new business enterprise.
